Modules

Methods of assessment for course overall: 50% coursework

Year 1

  • Introduction to technical theatre 1: lighting and sound
    A foundation module delivering essential skills in lighting, rigging, focusing, programming, recording and operation among others. You'll use a range of foundation software such as Q Lab and Cobalt.
  • Introduction to technical theatre 2: stage management, scenic and prop construction
    A further foundation skills module developing your holistic understanding of theatre processes including stage management, scenic and prop construction and design and key front-of-house functions. You'll collaborate with Product Design students in the technical workshops on this module.
  • Technical project: designing for performance
    Working with the skills developed in 'Introduction to technical theatre', you'll choose an area of specialist interest (lighting, sound, av) and develop a creative design for performance project using software such as Capture Light, Adobe Premier and Final Cut Pro.
  • Technical project 2: performance lab
    Working with BA Drama and Performance students, you'll develop a creative project from inception to performance delivering the technical operation and design for the work.
  • Introduction to AV technologies
    Introduction to AV software packages and their use in designing and operating for performance, focusing on projection mapping technologies and programmes such as Isadora and VPT 7.
  • Digital design and modelling

Year 2

  • Collaborative production
    Working with BA Drama and Performance students and a professional director you'll design, create and operate the technical elements of a full scale theatre production.
  • Multimedia performance project
    Focusing on advanced skills in projection, image capture and mapping, recording and found sound, and integration of live and recorded elements in performance you will work alongside BA drama and Performance students to create a piece of multi-media theatre.
  • Advanced theatre skills
    A 20 credit module focusing on Animation and SFX. Working with VFX and Product Design students you'll develop a high level awareness of current technologies around VFX/SFX and animation using a range of cutting edge software.
  • Industry placement
    A triple module where you'll engage in a 4-6 month placement in the theatre industry developing hands-on professional skills and refining your CV.

Year 3

  • Designing the site
    A 20 credit creative practice module. In this module you will model the industry practice of responding to a specific site and engage with the specific technical challenges posed.
  • Interactive technologies
    A 20 credit digital technologies module. This advanced module will consider image and video creation through filming, editing, graphics and 3D software. You'll also engage with experimental practices in theatre performance and audience relationship, investigating new ways of involving and empowering audiences through ownership of technology within performance.
  • Research project
    A 20 credit research module. This theoretical project will allow you to research and contextualise a specific area of interest within your own practice and to deliver an in-depth piece of practical or theoretical research.
  • Independent project
    A 60 credit creative practice module. Your final project will be developed over several months with the support of the teaching staff and will be showcased to the industry at the end of your degree.

All modules are assessed by a mix of practical assessment and written coursework.
