About this course

Applicants should normally hold a 2(i) Honours degree or equivalent in subjects relating to theology or the study of religion. In addition, students whose mother tongue is not English require IELTS 6.5. or TOEFL 580 with TWE 4.5.

Course programme

SYLLABUS

Students are required to take:

  • a course on method in theology (10 cr.)
  • and to attend a dissertation colloquium (10 cr.)

Students take four elective courses (20 cr. each) of which three are chosen from these subject areas in Theology and Religious Studies:

  • Practical Theology
  • Church History
  • Systematic Theology
  • Religious Studies
  • Biblical Theology

A large range of courses is available, which can include the following:

  • The Use of the Bible in Theology
  • Reformations and Recusants
  • Catholicism and Politics in the 20th Century
  • Contemporary Catholic Thought
  • Leadership Skills for Christian Ministry
  • Challenges for the Church in a Changing Culture
  • Anthropological Theories of Religion
  • Religion, Ideology and Politics
  • Special Subject (by agreement)

Students also write a 20,000 word dissertation (80 cr.) on a topic related to the degree.

Each student is appointed a supervisor who will assist in planning the period of study in a way that is appropriate to the qualifications and interests of the student.

Assessment

The taught courses will be assessed by coursework, by written examination, or by a combination of these, as prescribed for each course. The dissertation course will be assessed by submission of the dissertation. An oral examination may be held at the discretion of the Examiners. The degree of MTh shall not be awarded to candidates who fail to complete the dissertation at an appropriate standard, irrespective of their performance in other courses.
