Course programme

Tiling courses at The DIY School near Manchester are designed to enable students with little or no tiling experience to complete the majority of tiling jobs around the home, a property development project or as paid work. This includes bathroom tiling, kitchen tiling and conservatory tiling jobs to both floors and walls.

The 4 day tiling courses cover the essential skills that have enabled many of our students to become professional tilers many having moved from completely different careers or adding to existing construction industry skills such as plastering & plumbing. As an absolute minimum our students have saved money by tackling significant tiling projects in their own homes.

Our web site provides a detailed source of reference for you to continue to develop your skills after your Essential Tiling Course and the Advanced Tiling Course ( Due early in 2009 ) will enable you tackle more complex projects including floor and wall levelling, under floor heating projects and working with non ceramic tiles including natural stones etc.

On The DIY School 4 day Ardex essential tiling courses the exercises enable you to learn how to :

  • Prepare your job including tools, materials, cutting area and waste in order to maintain a manageable and professional work environment.
  • Select and estimate the correct quantity of tiles, adhesive and trim for the project.
  • Make a gauge or staff rod in order to plan and set out the tiling project creating a finished job with balanced cuts and avoiding unsightly “fingers” of tiles.
  • Fix horizontal and vertical guide batons including window heads.
  • Correctly mix the correct amount of adhesive for your rate of application.
  • Use tiling adhesive trowels, cutting tools both manual and electric.
  • Correctly apply tiles following the plan using spacers and compensating for slight imperfections in the wall.
  • Tile around windows, external corners and internal corners to maintain true lines and compensate for out of plumb corner, edges and reveals.
  • Cut wall and floor tiles around non uniform edges such as bathroom fitments etc.
  • Tackle basic geometric patterns including diamonds, cut patterns and mat mosaics.
  • Set out and lay floor tiles.
  • Mix and apply grout to wall and floor tiles.
  • Advice on estimating, quoting, employment and CSCS cards.
