The global growth of tourism has been accompanied by economic, environmental and social impacts that are crucial to industry development in order for it to expand and develop.
A key role in the development of tourism lies with the planners and developers who control and cultivate tourism to meet the varied needs of the different types of service providers and principles.
This course will examine these important areas, encouraging you to examine the management and development of tourism destinations so you develop an appreciation of the multi-disciplinary approaches required in the sector. You will focus on planning and development initiatives whilst building an awareness of contemporary issues.
A key feature of this course is the ‘live industry project’, where you will travel overseas for an external organisation and apply your skills and knowledge to developing tourism product and marketing development plans. Previous students have completed projects in Cyprus, Italy and Madeira.

About this course

Entry requirements
Tourism Destination Management MA
A good honours degree or equivalent from a recognised institution. Equivalent professional qualifications are also considered.
Tourism Destination Management PGDip
A degree or equivalent from a recognised institution or at least five years’ management experience.
UCB’s standard English language requirement for postgraduate study will apply (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent).

Destination Marketing
You will develop an understanding of the concept of marketing management in making marketing decisions in the context of destinations. You will analyse market structures and consumer behaviour, looking at managerial decision-making in light of increasing financial constraints.
Dynamics of Tourism
You will explore the impact of contemporary tourism issues on business organisations, adopting a local, national and international perspective relating to consumer preferences, product packaging, resources and risk and crisis management. You will assess future opportunities and evaluate strategies to seize them in this dynamic operating environment.
Live Project
By applying your project management skills to an organisation in the hospitality and tourism sector, you will develop your ability to product management solutions for a real business. You will get involved with project management at all stages, maintaining an interdisciplinary approach to develop solutions to project briefs.
Masters Dissertation
You will develop your knowledge and ability to focus on and prepare for research, being introduced to critical appraisal and research theory and techniques. You can tailor your research to focus on your own areas of interest within the industry.
The International Tourism Planning and Policy Environment
You will examine international policies and planning environments for tourism activity in the context of both development and control. You will also look at what constitutes a competitive destination and how policy and planning contribute to this as well as evaluate a destination's potential and how to enhance its appeal. You will assess approaches to planning and control and build strategies to meet current development trends.
Tourism Destination Histories
By looking at the contribution of history to the understanding of tourism, you will understand the links that exist between the two. You will analyse how tourism uses history and consider the themes of heritage, myth and legend, authenticity and historical representation in the provision on tourist experiences.
Tourism Planning Techniques
You will examine the techniques for auditing the performance of destinations relative to destination objectives and how they might be used to understand the internal and external environments and evaluate the impact of policies and strategies. You will appreciate the subtleties and political decision-making inherent in guiding the future direction of destinations.
