Translate in the City is the third literary translation summer school to be held at City University London. It offers the opportunity to translate texts across the literary genres into English, working with leading professional translators. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 20 students to allow for individual attention, and places will be allocated on a strictly "first come, first served" basis.The course will be taught in an all-day workshop environment using a variety of texts including non-fiction (essays, journalism, academic) and fiction (poetry, fantasy, children's literature and crime writing etc.) There will be plenty of opportunities for networking with publishers, agents, university staff and one another. Daily evening events will include a French Translation Slam, a Keynote Lecture by literary translator and editor (of the quarterly Modern Poetry in Translation) Sasha Dugdale, on Poetry, Birdsong and Translation and a Publishers’ Panel with Nick Sheerin (Profile Books), Emily Boyce (Gallic Books), Mark Richards (John Murray) and Sophie Lewis (And Other Stories). 10 bursaries of £100 each are offered to applicants across all languages. For the second year, the Italian publisher Mondadori will provide 5 extra bursaries of £100 each for participants joining the Italian workshop. For the first time, bursaries will also be available for Catalan. These will be awarded at the sole discretion of the SS15 directors. Please write to loic.pupile.2@city.ac.uk explaining the circumstances you believe make it imperative for you to receive a bursary towards your course fees. The deadline for bursary applications is 31st May.

A discount of 20% is offered to all City University London students.

A reduction for group bookings is also available with a £50 discount per student when three or more participants book together.

There are no formal entry requirements to take part in the course, except the language requirement detailed below.

English Requirements

As the workshops are all into English, it is essential that all applicants to the course are English native speaker level.
