The course aims to train translators for the language professions, i.e. translators who have acquired the key skills of the European Masters in Translation: in language skills (acquired before beginning the MA); in service provision, in intercultural awareness, in technology, in information mining and in subject specialisation. We envisage reflective, analytical translators with enquiring minds and an eye for detail. Suitable for: Suitable for language graduates wishing to follow a career in the translation industry; graduates in any discipline with excellent language skills wishing to move to a career in the translation industry; working translators wishing to gain a postgraduate qualification.

About this course

A good honours degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications. Degree-level familiarity with a second language.
For non-native English speakers: English proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 7.0 or equivalent with no component less than 6.5.

The MA Translation Studies (Masters in Translation Studies) at the University of Portsmouth is an accredited member of the European Masters in Translation Network.

The course is designed for language graduates wishing to become translators, for specialists in any area with high-level language skills who want to get into translation, and for practising translators wishing to obtain a formal qualification. The course languages, in combination with English, are
