As of the 1st May 2008 it became a legal requirement that any driver of a vehicle transporting livestock for gain must hold a Transport of Livestock Certificate.
There are two categories of certification:-
over 40 miles/65 kms and under 8 hours in journey time
OR
over 8 hours in journey time
The certificates are issued by NPTC (National Proficiency Testing Council)
These rules apply if the journey is for financial gain i.e. sale of livestock, professional riders (show-jumpers, polo players, eventers etc) appearance money at Agricultural shows or similar. It also includes any vehicle that carries advertising i.e. sponsorship. There rules
apply to the transport of cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, poultry, game birds, horses. There is separate certification for each category.
