Course outline

The BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism is equivalent to four GCSE grades A* to C and is taken as a full time course.

The BTEC First Diploma in Travel and Tourism is a work related course that gives you a lively and varied introduction to the travel and tourism industry. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based upon realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

Your year

You will study a mixture of units, which includes:

Introduction to the Travel and Tourism industry

Customer Service

European Holiday Destinations

Preparing for a Study Visit

Special entry requirements

You will need four GCSEs at grade D to obtain a place on the course and be able to communicate well both oral and written. You also need to have basic ICT skills and the ability to meet deadlines.

How you will learn

Through taught lessons, group discussions, research and individual study. The course is made practical wherever possible. Customer service, marketing and study visits are partly practical based units. Other units will focus upon areas such as tourist destinations and marketing. You will spend some time learning by doing and some of your time working in the IT suite.

How you will be assessed

The 6 units are entirely coursework based and you will be assessed in a variety of ways. This will include written work and practical assessments.

What you can do after this course

An overall Merit grade on BTEC First Travel and Tourism allows you to progress to BTEC National Travel and Tourism or other advanced level vocational subjects as well as AS Levels. You will have opportunities to attend short courses to enhance your programme of study. Students could also move to a modern apprenticeship or employment.
