Teams can be classified in a number of ways, with some teams being permanent work groups while others act on a short-term basis. Some believe that the key difference among the types of teams companies use is based on the amount of autonomy possessed by each team. Teams can be categorized along an autonomy continuum based on how autonomous they are in their actions. There are also some special classes of teams, which includes project teams, virtual teams, and cross-functional teams. Managers can work with many different types of teams, which in turn will decide what role a manager will play on those teams. This course discusses how teams are categorized based on autonomy, along with some special types of teams.
