Summary

The course is designed to provide for care support workers an extensive
overview to the most common ailments that affect the elderly individuals they support. The course covers
aetiology, practical reflective intervention tools and to identify objective
reporting and observation skills.

Who should attend?

This course is relevant to all workers who provide direct personal care to clients
in all care settings – hospital, residential, day- or foster-care or in the
client’s own home.

Proposed Learner Outcomes - The worker must be able to

• Understand the main effects of a specific condition or syndrome
experienced by the service user groups.
• Understand how to respond to needs created by specific conditions,
impairments or disabilities
• Gain knowledge of what happens to our bodies as we get older
• Understand how we can improve the quality of life for the older
person
• Be able to name at least 6 of the complex diseases that
sometimes afflict the older person
• Identify interventions and responses required to a specific illness
• Understand the use and purpose of each record or report the worker
has to use or contribute to.
• Demonstrate the ability to report in a way that is objective and relevant
• Understand the responsibility of the care worker to report
anything that worries them in the process of their work
