Course programme

The period between 1890 and 1960 witnessed unprecedented social, technological and political upheaval. Led by Lis Darby, Programme Director of MA in Contemporary Design, this course explores the ideologies that defined the enduring styles of twentieth century furniture design, from the decline of Victorian eclecticism to the beginning of the Space Age.

The sessions examine trends such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernism whilst setting the leading practitioners and key examples of each movement into historical context.

It may be taken as a stand-alone design course or as a prelude to Understanding Design, Part II: 1960-2010.
