Understanding Diabetes Care

This six month module is designed specifically for healthcare assistants working in primary care who are assisting healthcare professionals in the management of clients with diabetes. It enhances their knowledge and skills in the field of diabetes in relation to the care of clients with the disease and their families. It focuses on the key aspects of care and the organisation and management of the services available to support the care given. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the health needs of the individual, health promotion and empowerment.

Students will need an agreed, clincally skilled mentor.

• Describe the disease process of diabetes and complications linked to the condition
• Explain the principles to the diagnosis, monitoring and management of clients with diabetes
• Gather, record and describe the data to assess the care and management of a client with diabetes
• Apply given methods to support clients in the self-management of their diabetes
• Describe the importance of a multi-professional approach to care and have an awareness of their role within it
• Be able to act under direction and within defined guidelines to support and manage a client with diabetes
• Identify the different services available to support the care of clients with diabetes
• Identify own learning needs and develop a personal development plan to maximise own learning
• Demonstrate effective writing skills
• Engage in team activities to enhance a co-operative approach to learning and working.

One hour unseen examination comprising of four short essay questions based on the content of the module.
2000 word focused case study.
