EUROPHOTONICS - Master in Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics

Judith Ibáñez Sánchez

01/09/2010
What I would highlight: Recently concluding my Master degree in the European program Europhotonics, Photonics engineering, nanophotonics and biophotonics. I have been developing my master tesis in the Astronomy Institute of Mexico City, working in the optical instrumentation department in the Optimization of a Shack-Hartmann Wave-front sensor of an astronomical Adaptive Optics system that will be installed in the largest telescope of Mexico in the National Observatory of San Pedro Mártir.
What could be improved: I liked everything.
Course taken: September 2010

Description

This doctorate program is based on a consortium of excellence research institutes and universities in the interdisciplinary fields of photonics engineering, nanophotonics, and biophotonics :

- Paul Cézanne Aix Marseille III University / Institut Fresnel (France)

- Universität Karlsruhe (TH) - KSOP (Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics) (Germany)

- Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC)

- ICFO - Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (Spain)

- Universita degli Studi di Firenze / LENS (European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy) (Italy).

These institutions are recognized for their high quality training and research centers in the field of Optics and Photonics and their applications, with the unique opportunity to benefit from the presence of excellent and interdisciplinary research institutes, high level advising by professors and administrative staff, as well as local companies and international cooperation networking.

In this field a large number of top rank laboratories and teaching networks at the master level (including Erasmus Mundus programs) exist in Europe and at the international level. There was however no European doctorate program yet in this field, to the best of our knowledge. The partners of the consortium considered that the scientific field of Photonics, constantly growing within both fundamental and applied research frames in a highly competitive and innovative context, required adequate educational level that was not yet reached at the European level. With this aim, the present Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate program was proposed, unifying important actors in the field in an alternative approach that brings the training/teaching/research closer to the new challenges in the field.
