The aim of this course is to introduce beginners to a basic range of skills and techniques, whilst developing those already gained at the intermediate and advanced level. Throughout the course, new skills and techniques will be taught, as they arise on individual projects. Progress on individual projects will be determined, by the condition of the piece being worked on, the size and complexity of the project, along with the ability and speed at which individuals work.

What is the entry process?

There are no formal entry requirements, but an interest, and a basic ability in sewing, an interest in fabrics and interior trends would be advantageous. 

What else do I need to know?

The type of project to work on

Beginners – a SMALL project such as a footstool (modern or traditional), drop in/on seat (modern or traditional), Upholstered box or a stuff over chair (without springs)

Intermediates – A sprung stuff over chair with springs, fireside chair (modern or traditional), headboard.

Advanced – A large arm chair, with or without wings (modern or traditional), a deep buttoned project (modern or traditional)

NOTE: - For Health and Safety reasons, we no longer accept sofas or chaise lounge and other large and, or heavy upholstery projects need to be discussed with a tutor before being brought into the college.

First class – alongside your chosen project, it would be advisable to bring, a basic sewing kit (small and large scissors, tape measure, needles and pins) and a note book and pencil.

Upholstery materials – the majority of the materials used in traditional upholstery will be on sale through the upholstery department. Replacement foam and less frequently used items, will need to be sourced on occasions outside of the college. Top fabrics are will have to be sourced out of college.

Upholstery tools and equipment – the majority of the hand tools that are required are available to be used in the workshops, along with over lockers, pneumatic staple guns and industrial, domestic sewing machines (thread will need to be provided)

Health and safety – As you will be working in a workshop environment it is important to dress appropriately for Health and Safety reasons – no loose clothing which could easily be caught on, or, in furniture or machinery. Closed toe, foot ware, should be worn all year round – NO SANDALS.
