About this course

Four GCSEs grades D or above. Level 1 Award in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and an interview. All students must attend an assessment day. Students need to be employed in the Motor vehicle industry.

Aim This NVQ is a work-based qualification that assesses the skills and knowledge that people in your job need to perform their job role effectively.

It is a motor industry qualification that covers activities that relate to service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a broad working knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Content The qualification includes the following areas:
· Carrying out routine vehicle maintenance
· Removing and replacing engine units, electrical auxiliary units, chassis units and components.

And offers opportunities for candidates to also demonstrate:
· Conducting pre and post work vehicle inspections
· Valeting vehicles
· Removing and replacing vehicle transmission and driveline units and components.

You will demonstrate your skills and knowledge by collecting evidence of your work. This evidence is usually presented in a portfolio (however your approved centre may use an alternative method). Your assessor will advise you on how to generate, collect and present your evidence. You will also undertake IMI set on-line multiple-choice tests.

Progression/career opportunities
Employment in the retail motor trade and an NVQ Level 2 apprenticeship.

Extra information All students will be required to purchase appropriate protective equipment (PPE) including overalls and boots. There is a £60 fee on all motor vehicle courses to cover the cost of your equipment including text books, files, pens, pencils, paper and polo t-shirts to be paid at enrolment.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
