This two and a half year programme will train you to become an RCVS registered veterinary nurse.
This course combines on-campus study with practical studies and placement sections to fully develop veterinary nursing skills. Choose to study full-time on our Oatridge Campus in West Lothian. If you study at Oatridge you'll also benefit from placement experience at the  Small Animal Hospital at Glasgow University Veterinary School. All Practical training progress and assessment is recorded in an online Nursing Progress Log. If you're certified and have successfully completed external exams, you can apply for registration as a Registered Veterinary Nurse with the RCVS once you have completed the required number of training hours.

Course programme

Placement Information:

The course is delivered in blocks. You will attend the College for up to five weeks intense delivery then into placement for up to 12 weeks. Each year of delivery has a different pattern. In Year 1 you will attend College for the first four weeks then into a placement for 12 weeks than return to college for another block and so on.

How Course Is Assessed:

  • NPL - Nursing Progress Log
  • Continual college assessment
  • Assessment in Practice
  • College practical assessment (OSCE)
  • Year-end assignment for each year of the course

Entry Requirements:

  • Five National 5 passes at Grade C or above
  • Equivalent qualifications: Standard Grade Level 3; Intermediate 2 Grade C; Intermediate 1 Grade A
  • These must include English, Maths and a Science subject
  • A minimum of ten days work experience in a veterinary practice
  • Entry to the full-time programme is very competitive; additional Highers in Science, Maths or English would be an advantage along with extra work experience in a veterinary practice.
  • Additional experience such as in kennels or stables is helpful but cannot be considered in lieu of experience in practice
  • For the block-release option, you`ll also need to be currently employed in a training practice - veterinary training practices must be approved by the centre and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)
  • You must also have an agreement with your employer for you to take this course before applying
