Brief Description of the Course:

Block release Year 1 – 4 x 2 week blocks, 8 weeks in total per year.

Block release Year 2 – 3 x 2 week blocks and 2 x 1 week blocks, 8 weeks in total per year.

Day Release: 1 day per week over 2 years, 40 weeks per year.Revision and mock examinations.

Entry Criteria:

You must be in paid employment in a Veterinary Training Practice and have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above in English Language, Science, and Mathematics plus 2 others. OR relevant Equivalent qualifications as recognised by City & Guilds.

Fees - Dependent on Age and Previous Qualifications.

  • 303 - Professional relationships and communication for veterinary nursing practice

  • 306 - Essentials of practical nursing care for hospitalised animals
  • 307 - Supporting the supply of veterinary medicines
  • 308 - Veterinary nursing support of diagnostic imaging

This qualification leads to professional registration and a licence to practice. It is a requirement of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Regulatory Bye-laws that such qualifications be subject to independent assessment and examination.

The qualification will accordingly be assessed using a variety of methods:

  • City & Guilds external examination of knowledge and understanding
  • City & Guilds OSCE examination of essential clinical skills
  • Nursing progress log (NPL)
  • Independently assessed assignments and examinations

Industrial / Work Experience: This qualification requires candidates to have access to suitable work experience in clinical veterinary practice for a minimum of 60 weeks. This will be on the basis of paid employment.

Progression: Higher Education Diploma Clinical Veterinary Nursing leading to RCVS Diploma Advanced Nursing leading to BSc (Hons) Clinical Veterinary Nursing.

Special Requirements:

    1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment: White Laboratory coat, uniform, stethoscope and watch with a second hand. Suitable outdoor clothing, footwear, gloves and a hard kite marked riding hat (if available) for equine practical sessions.

    2 Extra Costs: Enrolment, RCVS examination fees. Textbooks - As required.
