Course programme
Studying on the Visual Communication and Graphic Design course will enable you to explore a broad range of graphic design and art processes and give you a confident understanding of visual communication This course has a strong vocational emphasis, and will introduce you to 2D, 3D and time based subjects in order to realise your strengths You will additionally develop skills in digital illustration and graphic techniques including type, print and layout design You will become familiar with using the creative cycle: a valuable skill recognised by employers In this context you will learn to manage professional projects from research to idea development and fully-realised graphic solutions You'll be encouraged to develop your own visual identity, and also to communicate and present your ideas in visual, oral and written forms to a range of audiences This qualification will require you to develop a coherent and effective working methodology, through immersion, reiteration and reinforcement, which will enable you to react positively and creatively across a diverse range of assignments and creative activities The final Unit of years 1 and 2 will require you to demonstrate the independent capacity to self initiate, research, analyse, organise, reflect and evaluate commensurate with study in higher education
How will I be assessed?You will be continually assessed during and at the end of each project you undertake Your feedback will be both verbal and written, ensuring that you have the necessary guidance to ensure you leave us with the best qualification grade All tutors and Trainer Demonstrators are practising industry professionals
What may it lead to?The creative industries are one of the largest in the South East and include a very diverse range of creative careers Previous students have progressed to undertake specialist courses in: Graphic Design, Illustration, Advertising and Marketing, Shoe Design, Fashion Marketing, Visual Merchandising, Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration, Product Design, Transport Vehicle Design, Animation, Computer Generated Art and Games Design Our 2 year programme is equivalent to 3 A level Qualifications and will enable students to go on to a range of Higher Education courses The final unit of the second year of the course is available at Level 4, helping students to progress into Higher Education
Entry RequirementsFive GCSEs at grade A-C (including English, Maths and Art)
Work ExperienceOur Visual Communication and Graphic Design students participate in a broad range of work experience activities that give our learners essential professional knowledge Our live projects connect our students with the local and national community allowing for future professional network opportunities Previous opportunities have led us to work with: Dreamland, Margate The Beaney Museum, Canterbury The Powell Cotton Museum, Birchington The Turner Contemporary, Margate St Martins Hospital Canterbury Canterbury Cathedral Our learners also have opportunities to participate in our own Cloud9 Design Studio where students work with marketing professionals to develop design solutions This experience provides a real life studio environment where students can actively participate on a broad range of live projects as part of their work experience
Additional Information & Other CostsYou will spend up to four days a week in College and must also be prepared to undertake independent study to support your tutor-guided lessons Each year we run a number of enrichment trips to exhibitions and galleries There are also opportunities to participate in European residential visits The costs for these trips are additional and must be met by students if they wish to attend
