What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design

How will I be assessed?

All non A Level qualifications including BTECs will now have some part of the course assessed externally (up to a maximum of 40% of the units). This still means that the majority of a BTEC course is assessed as normal as a student progresses through the two years by the teachers at the College through the coursework but there will be some units that have external assessments. The external assessments can take many forms: some might be practical projects such as responding to a particular brief or working on a project in controlled conditions, as well as traditional written or online examinations. Examples of all of the different types of assessment will be created in time to allow all students to practice and prepare for the real thing.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Minimum of four GCSE passes at grade C or above preferably to include a relevant arts/design based subject.
Alternatively a BTEC Level 2 qualification in Art & Design or a related subject at Merit or above is acceptable.
Students will be required to take functional skills in English and maths in their first year of study should they not have GCSE English or Maths at grade C or above. The level of functional skills will be decided at initial assessment.
Applicants will be invited to attend an interview at which a portfolio of work will be reviewed, along with a set task.

In addition applicants are also required to complete an ‘entry project’ before they are accepted on the course. Mature candidates with appropriate experience will also be considered.

What else do I need to know?

Visits to exhibitions, galleries, professional fairs, manufacturers and suppliers’ premises and other venues are part of the course. The Art & Design students also have the opportunity to participate in the annual residential trip abroad.
Whilst we do not offer work placement on the course we strongly encourage our students to find work experience in local businesses. We do however undertake live client-based ‘live’ projects and expect all our students to use these opportunities to showcase their professional skills.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of this course students will be able to seek employment in the world of graphic design, interactive media and photography or they may wish to progress to a course in Higher Education such as a BA (Hons) or Higher National Diploma (HND). The course has a highly successful record for enabling students to progress to Higher education courses across the visual communication disciplines
