Methods of assessment for course overall: 100% coursework

Year 1

  • Art and sound design
    This module covers design techniques and processes integral to art and sound design in film and games. Specifically, you'll learn to observe, record, express and represent both objects and sounds, and, in doing so, explore the relationship of sound and image in VFX.
  • 2D animation
    An introduction to principles of 2D animation including spacing, lip syncing, facial design and timing.
  • Digital design
    This module focuses on the application of 2D and 3D dimensional design. You'll be presented with specific briefs to stimulate visual thinking, encourage ideas generation, and promote new approaches to the design process.
  • Visual effects aesthetics
    This module covers specularity or invisibility – the ‘look’ of visual effects.
  • Digital sculpting
    In this module you’ll learn how to use digital painting and sculpting software to create and modify 3D geometry and textures in your work.
  • Special effects or theatre technologies option
    You can take options in theatre technologies, special effects or product design.

Year 2

  • 3D animation
    You'll learn how to work with key frames motion capture, character design, rigging and character animation.
  • Visual effects ecologies 1
    In the ecologies modules you'll work on large scale collaborative projects specialising in design-led or technology-led options, mirroring the way VFX professionals work in the industry.
  • Visual effects ecologies 2
    In the ecologies modules you'll work on large scale collaborative projects specialising in design-led or technology-led options, mirroring the way VFX professionals work in the industry.
  • Special effects or theatre technologies option
    You can take optional module from Theatre Technologies, Special Effects or Product Design courses.
  • Industry placement
    Your industry placement is an opportunity to apply and develop your skills, knowledge and networking abilities in an industry setting.

Year 3

  • Research project
    This project allows you to research and contextualise a specific area of interest within your own VFX practice and to deliver an in-depth piece of practical or theoretical research.
  • Independent project
    This module provides a critical framework through which to develop, realise and exhibit a coherent and critically informed advanced final year project. Building upon individual research and experimentation and supported by your teaching and technical staff, your work will be showcased to the industry in a high profile End of Year Show.
  • Working in the creative technology industries
    Guest lectures, masterclasses and developing a professional profile in preparation for work in the industry.
