Visual Studies

Is this course right for me?

This course is for students who wish to develop their creativity through the integration of illustration, digital arts, fine art practices, print-making and photography.

What will I be learning?

In the first year you will explore a range of approaches to image making and manipulation, developing your techniques and problem solving skills. The second year encourages you to work more independently, developing ideas and skills toward personal interests. Modules include: design communication; audio visual and digital imaging; structure and form; image and expression and professional skills.

How will I learn?

Your performance in each module will be assessed through coursework. You will be assessed through a variety of methods which may include: essays, production work, portfolio work, presentations, case studies, work based learning, practical assessment, critiques and report writing. You will be given assessment criteria in each case, which are used to judge the extent of your achievement.
Self directed study and individual research are also key learning methods. Modules are introduced through briefings, discussion and practical workshops. Seminars and critiques encourage group interaction and personal critical reflection. The programme is assignment based and requires students to engage in independent study and directed research activity. Coursework is assessed at the end of every module and indicative grades awarded to all assignments. All work is exhibited at the end of the year and students also work toward external exhibitions of their work.
Trips and visits, alongside a programme of visiting practitioners, also form a crucial element of the way you will learn.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the foundation degree you may wish to progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) Illustration at the University of Plymouth. You are also able to apply for other appropriate courses. Many students opt to set up their own businesses, gain employment as freelance designers, or find employment in the design industry. Past students have been successful in: illustration; graphic design; advertising; animation; photography and arts administration.
