The Web Authoring part time course is a hands-on course aimed at beginners with no previous knowledge of HTML. The course teaches the fundamental concepts in web design, management and implementation using HTML.Students are guided through a step-by-step process to create a fully functioning website using examples and exercises.The Web Authoring course is taught over 10 weeks in evening classes between 18:30 - 20:30. The course is challenging and taught by Dr Faezeh Seyedarabi who has several years’ experience in the industry.Classes are practical with a strong emphasis on giving you the fundamental skills in order to code your own website by the end of the course. During the part-time course you will learn the HTML building blocks to enable you to start coding websites. Course programme

What will I learn?
  • Context: About the Internet and Web. W3C and web standards. Resources and tools e.g. code editors, HTML exports from productivity suites such as MS Office and WYSIWYG editors. The processes and skill sets involved in site planning, design and construction. Site management. Client-server solutions. Platform and browser compatibility. Prototyping.
  • Coding: Fundamentals of HTML including doctypes, formatted text, links, images, image maps, tables, forms, and meta tags. Overview of XHTML, CSS (stylesheets) and other site content such as JavaScript and Flash.
  • HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) including usability and accessibility.
  • Graphics. Vectors and bitmaps. Web image types. Image optimisation. Example uses.
  • Other issues: Fundamental security and good programming considerations. Testing and validation. Site publicity/marketing e.g. search engine submission.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental characteristics of the Web, such as its development
  • Design and create a web site including graphics content.
