Who is this course for? A BTEC National Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work place situations, activities and demands. The programme is designed to be equally accessible and relevant for learners aged 16-19 years of age or mature learners with or without experience.
Previous knowledge required: You will generally need a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or equivalent. GCSE Science is desirable but not essential. You will also need to complete a satisfactory interview and demonstrate a strong commitment to succeed.
What will I study? The programme includes a range of core and specialist units all designed to provide the knowledge and skills required for working in Health & Social Care settings. The core units that are mandatory for the Diploma include: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care Developing effective communication in Health and Social Care Health, Safety and Security in Health and Social Care Development through the Life Stages Sociological and Physiological Perspectives for Health and Social Care Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care Physiological Disorders
What else will I do? You will complete the level 3 Advanced Baccalaureate Diploma alongside the National Diploma in Health and Social Care (See separate information leaflet) Plus Emergency First Aid, Food Safety in Catering and Health and Safety Certificates.
How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by completing assignments linked to the units that you study. You will also complete a Personal and Professional Portfolio based on your work placements.
What will I achieve? Successful completion of the programme will provide you with the opportunity to achieve the BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care (Health Studies), which is equivalent to 3 A Levels, and a variety of subsidiary awards plus the Welsh Baccalaureate at level 3 (equivalent to 1 A level.)
What can I do afterwards? As this course is equivalent to 4 A levels you can decide whether to progress onto Higher Education or into Employment. If you do decide to go to University you could take a Degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Science and other Professions allied to Medicine, Social Work Psychology and Social Policy.
Materials required: You will be asked to purchase a course text book and a College T shirt for Placement.
