Welsh (Second Language)
Students will be given the opportunity to express themselves in Welsh, in a written and oral form. There will also be the opportunity to write creatively, read independently, respond to different texts and appreciate literary forms.During the course you will have the opportunity to practise speaking Welsh with your teacher, and other Welsh students. There may be an opportunity to visit Nant Gwrtheyrn, the National Language Centre in North Wales. You will also be given the chance to participate in extracurricular activities, e.g. Eisteddfodau.

You will be assessed on Oral, Reading and Writing skills.

Unit 1 Oral
Candidates will be questioned on the following:
Contemporary multi-media culture in Wales.
The film Hedd Wyn.
Themes arising from the film.

Unit 2 Written Coursework
Students will be asked to put together a package of between 2,000
and 3,000 words, containing at least four extended pieces in different
formats.

Unit 3 Use of Language and Poetry
Section A: A composite question containing different types of linguistic
exercises, and one creative writing question.

Section B: Three structured questions on the set topics.

Unit 1: 1.5 hour oral exam 20%

Unit 2: Internal assessment 15%

Unit 3: 2 hour written exam 15%

A2
You will be assessed on Oral, Reading and Writing skills.

Unit 4 Oral
Drama and Oracy. Candidates will be questioned on the following in
groups of three:
A discussion of the contemporary multi-media culture in Wales.
The play Siwan.
A discussion of the links between different aspects of Welsh by
combining and co-ordinating the knowledge, understanding and skills
developed in the subject.

Unit 5 Short Story and Purposeful Concurrent Use of Language
Section A: Two structured questions on the set texts.

Section B: Purposeful Concurrent Use of Language - a written response
in Welsh to an English article.

Unit 6 Use of Language and Appreciation of Poetry
Section A: Composite question containing different types of linguistic
exercises.

Section B: Two structured questions on poetry and one synoptic question.

Unit 4: One half-hour oral exam 15%

Unit 5: One hour-and-three-quarter written exam 20%

Unit 6: One three-quarter hour written exam 15%Welsh is spoken by over 20% of the population of Wales. It is a modern living language that is used on a daily basis in many vocations, including business, local government, the media, tourism, journalism, marketing and politics.
