Course Overview

An optional 40-week industry work placement is available on this course.

In recent years the pace of change in communication systems has reached a staggering rate. New principles, standards, tools and technologies are emerging every few months. Recent advances have now started to mature and have become common in today’s marketplace, including computer communication, wireless networks, cellular mobile networks and satellite communication leading to a boom in personal communication devices.

The advent of wireless local area networks has already had a great impact on organisations by reducing installation and complexity costs, and offering broadband connectivity between computers. The success of wireless local area networks is due to the coexistence of well developed wireless technologies and the hugely successful Ethernet. The wireless local area networks have resulted in significant reductions in the cost of connectivity.

Both Wireless Local Area Networks and Mobile Communications have their own unique design and implementation challenges, ranging from planning, specification, examining performance, and management, to security issues which require expertise at postgraduate level. A key aspect of this course is creating solutions for a networking problem by applying rigorously and appropriately tools and techniques as well as the communication technologies. This requires a critical understanding of all aspects of the design process and the problem domain. As a postgraduate of this course you will be capable of analysing problem characteristics and delivering wireless communication solutions.

Throughout this course units (subjects) are taught intensively, usually over 4.5 days in one or two weeks, with assessment normally taking place a few weeks after the delivery of the unit.
