Course programme

What will I learn during the course?
The aim is familiarisation with tools & materials, and gaining confidence in their use, by making
an item of your choice.

Objectives:
· To gain confidence in working with wood
· To improve competence in design, marking out and making
· To become familiar with a range of tools and materials
· To make something you’ll enjoy and be proud of!

If you do not have an on-going project, week 1 can be used to consider potential ideas and discuss plans, materials etc with the tutor

Are there specific requirements for joining?
(This might include a prior knowledge of Maths or English)
Enthusiasm, ability to learn how to design and make items from wood. Previous experience helps but is not essential.

How will I learn?
Demonstration and individual tuition. Participants will be expected to make items themselves with advice and assistance as and when required.

How will my progress be recorded?
Review of your skills at the beginning, middle and end of the course, in discussion with the tutor.

Will there be homework? If so how much/how many hours?
No, but you might wish to research your design between sessions. You may need to buy your materials once you know what you will need. (See also below)

Will there be additional costs?
Yes. You will need to either provide materials or ask the tutor to provide them. Obviously costs will vary greatly depending on the project chosen. This can be discussed at the start of the course.

Do I need specific equipment or clothes?
Tools and equipment are provided.
Clothing should be suitable for a dusty workshop environment. Please wear sensible shoes and avoid loose & trailing clothes.

What can I do next?
We run a wide range of courses based in Kendal, Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale. You could also look at courses organised by other local Adult Education Centres at Cartmel, Dallam, Kendal Brewery Arts Centre and Kirkby Stephen.

Parking & Venue Information
The entrance to the school is opposite the Fire Station
During the school day please park on main road. Parking available in school grounds out of school hours.
Entrance on left under old porch. Turn right and the CDT room is across the lobby.

Additional information

Payment options: Please add a £2 annual centre fee if this is your first course since September 2009. This fee is payable once per person per year. Please make cheque payable to “Cumbria County Council”.
