Working With “Friends Of….” Groups
Working With “Friends Of….” Groups

This popular event is designed for environmental professionals whose work involves setting up and working with ‘Friends of ...’ groups based at parks, woodlands and nature reserves. The event is most suitable for people such as community forest staff, rangers, project managers, field and project officers, woodland officers, rural community council and local authority staff.  The programme will look at the role of the support officer, setting up a group, constitutions, roles for members, action planning, and providing long term support.  The event is ideal for those who are new to working with friends groups, but those with a little experience or who are experiencing difficulties should also find it useful.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the event you will:
• Have guidelines for best practice for working with friends groups
• Have examined your role in relation to the group
• Have insight into how a group should be set up and what makes a group work well
• Have gained some useful tips and handouts to facilitate successful group working

THE TUTOR
Mac Carding is an independent trainer with experience in many aspects of environmental community work.  She has worked with community groups since 1993 and has designed and delivered training and action planning for a variety of environmental projects and groups, from issue based campaign groups to children’s wildlife clubs. She has experience of setting up and running successful voluntary groups, working on both sustainability and countryside issues. From 1998-2001 Mac was co-ordinator of Vale Royal Environment Network, which brought together environmental and education professionals with community voluntary groups to share good practice and develop partnership working and from 2002-2008 was employed by The Mersey Forest to support community groups who manage woodlands. She has worked with communities, local authority officers and environmental organisations based in both affluent countryside and in areas of severe deprivation.

On ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINERS NETWORK

Provider description
The ETN training programme is an open programme of short courses designed mainly for people and organisations involved in the environment and aimed primarily at the voluntary sector, although roughly 30% of participants come from local authorities and government funded agencies. We run about 80-90 events a year in a range of subjects, all held in England at various locations chosen for ease of access by all means of transport – typically Birmingham, London, Leeds, York, Manchester, Bristol, Doncaster, Durham, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Stourport-on-Severn, Sandy, Southampton, Swindon & Peterborough. The events are delivered by trainers drawn from BTCV, other organisations, and freelancers – they are all practitioners and experienced in their field. The organisations in the loose network, listed in the column on the left, contribute in various ways such as acting as a source of trainers or venues, training needs information, or helping to market the programme by circulating the publicity information through their organisations, own networks and contacts.

Course provider history
The Environmental Trainers Network (ETN) is a loose, informal network of organisations across the environmental voluntary sector. ETN itself was established in 1991 as a network of trainers and training managers in environmental organisations. Its activities are broadly overseen by a Steering Group currently drawn from Black Environment Network, BTCV and RSPB. Until about 1997 ETN received funding from the then Countryside Commission (now merged into Natural England) which it used to hold meetings and provide services for its members. Once this funding ceased, the Steering Group decided to focus its efforts on maintaining the training programme, which it first began running in 1994.
