WORKING WITH PARENTS (1 DAY COURSE)

ABOUT THE COURSE
Most people who trained to work in the childcare settings concentrated their learning on their vocational choices, e.g. teaching, medicine, play and development, speech therapy, residential work, fostering, legislation etc. It is often not until we work within the real day-to–day setting that we realise that working with adults is often the most important and difficult part of the job. Parents are our most important service user alongside the child in any setting; in fact the parent provides our route to working with the child in most situations. It is therefore crucial that we learn how to engage positively with parents even when there is resistance or there are difficult issues to discuss.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

This course will enable participants to:

  • Understand the legislation that guides our practices in relation to the rights of children and their parents.
  • Understand the practical and theoretical approaches that will help them to take their practices to the next level when working positively with parents.
  • Acknowledge the importance of developing a team ethos that puts parents at the centre of the child’s world.
  • Explore the barriers that can get in the way and make it difficult to work positively and confidently in this area.
  • Understand relationships between the parent and the child as well as how the child’s developmental stage can impact on the family.
  • Gain a sense of how self-esteem impacts on the human-being interaction and use that learning positively and skillfully as a professional worker.
  • Look at what we find most difficult and most positive about working with parents and create some strategies for practices.

On completion of the course delegates are provided with course materials and are awarded a certificate. The training will commence at 9:30am and finish at 3:30pm. This course runs with a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 25 delegates.
