Course programme

The two day health & Safety training course will incorporate six Risk Assessment training programmes:- General Risk, Young Persons, New and Expectant Mothers, Manual Handling, First Aid and Display Screen Equipment.

General Risk Assessment - Day 1

Following an insight into the statutory requirements for risk assessment under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and First Aid at Work Regulations 1981, but using practical studies and pro-formas, this course will cover:

  • The meaning of the terms hazard and risk
  • The systematic approach to conducting risk assessments
  • Risk reduction and control strategies
  • Specific requirements for pregnant workers and young persons
  • Specific requirements for assessing First Aid needs

Manual Handling Assessment - Day 2 (morning)

This course will review the general requirements to assess risk under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and then focus on manual handling activities with models and practical exercises. The course includes:

  • A study of anatomy and ergonomics
  • Manual handling injuries and conditions
  • Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • Assessment of task, individual load and environment

Display Screen Assessment - Day 2 (afternoon)

An appreciation of the need to assess risks will follow with a detailed insight into DSE problems, assessment and controls.

  • Anatomy of the spine and effects of poor posture
  • Types of injury and ill health effects (with work rates and upper limb disorders)
  • Duties under the Display Screen Equipment Regulations
  • Guidance and standards relating to DSE equipment and activities
  • Assessing the workstation
  • A typical DSE assessment form will be completed during this practical session
