Today’s materials scientists are developing advanced new materials required for applications ranging from microscopic robots to super-jumbo aeroplanes and
their engines. This course is sponsored by LATEST2, The University of Manchester and the Worshipful Company of Founders.
What will I be doing?
• Discovering the breadth of materials science, with sessions exploring not just engineering materials but also biomedicalmaterials science and technical textiles
• Learning the art of materials selection, combination and optimum use in materials technology across a range of engineering applications
• Discovering the fundamental relationships between different materials, the form they take and the jobs they perform
• Exploring the physical and chemical properties of modern materials and how they determine their application
• Working on a team project to design, build and test an aerospace component
• Taking part in our ‘Demolition Derby’ to learn more about materials used in car manufacture
• Finding out what it is like to work as a materials engineer with a visit to a local company
• Improving skills in team building, communication, time management, problem solving, planning and presentations
