Course information:
Year 2 - A2 Level in Physics

Course content:
The course is designed with the aim of encouraging students to develop essential knowledge and understanding in Physics, to be aware of the relationship of Physics to everyday life and of the interaction of Physics with engineering and technology.
By the end of the course students should appreciate how Physics has developed and is used in present day society - appropriate applications will be discussed to indicate the skills needed to adapt physical principals to new and changing situations.
The course should enable students to understand the links between theory and experiment and to recognise the quantitative nature of Physics so that they understand how mathematical expressions relate to physical principals.
The students will hopefully sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in, Physics so that the complete course will provide a sound basis for further study particularly in the fields of engineering, applied science, pure science and medicine.

The course is divided into three modules:-

A2 module 4 - Further Physics.
Circular motion, Oscillations, Work and energy, Molecular Kinetic theory, Heating and working, Capacitance, Momentum concepts, Quantum phenomena.

A2 module 5 - Fields and their Applications

Electrical fields, Gravitational fields, Nuclear energy, Magnetic fields, Exponential decay, Particle accelerators and detectors

A2 module 6 - Experimental work
Planning, Evaluating evidence and procedures, Implementing, Linking experiment and theory, Analysing evidence and drawing conclusions

Assessment procedure:
The assessment objectives include the recall of knowledge with understanding, the application of knowledge and understanding in unfamiliar situations, the collection, interpretation and evaluation of data, the performance of relevant calculations, and the ability to assess the validity of physical information, experiments, inferences and statements.
The quality of written communication will be assessed in all A2 assessment units where candidates are required to produce extended written material.
There will be three externally set and marked assessments:-

A2 module 4 - 1½ hour examination PHB4 (15% of total A level marks)

A2 module 5 - 2 hour examination PHB5 + synoptic element
(20% of total A level marks)

A2 module 6 - 3 hour examination Synoptic assessment in practical context in two components. (15% of total A level marks)

Students will have limited facility to resit module tests. Modules tests will be available in January and June.

Qualifications achieved:
GCE A2 Level Physics syllabus (B) awarded by AQA

Free study and financial support:
Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance.
