Course programme

Course Overview

This course is designed to provide intensive practical and theoretical training and experience in cinematography for film and TV. You will work along side industry professionals and with the latest technologies to develop expertise and real world knowledge of crafting images on screen. You will explore and gain experience in a wide range of fields across the camera, lighting and grip departments. You will learn to shoot on Super 16 and 35mm film as well as on the revolutionary digital cinema, tape and tapeless camera systems, including RED, D20, Si2K, F950, F750, JVC HM700. You will leave equipped with the skills required to confidently enter the industry, fulfilling roles ranging from Director of Photography, Camera Assistant, Focus Puller, Clapper Loader, Grip, Gaffer and many others to an expert standard.

Learning Objectives

• To have a broad understanding of film & TV production and where cinematography sits within the wider scope of a full production environment
• To achieve a high standard of motion picture photography in the creative application of framing and light to produce a desired emotional and aesthetic setting for a scene
• To experience and gain practical knowledge of shooting on "Digital Cinema", film, and HD camera systems whilst understanding the technical and creative process undertaken in post production
• To understand the basic technical and scientific principles of cinematography
• To acquire the specific professional skills and contacts to help you start your career in the film and/or TV industry within the camera/lighting department.

Production Experience

• Experience shooting with state of the art digital cinema and HD cameras systems
• Experience shooting with S16 and 35mm shooting and post production workflow
• Experience shooting with a wide range of lighting and grip equipment
• Two short films made with support from industry professionals
• In excess of twenty further shooting exercises which will be analysed with the instructor to help build your showreel
• Experience of performing key camera and lighting roles on other students’ shoots, to build your CV:

Director of Photography, Camera Operator, Camera Assistant, Clapper Loader, DIT, Focus Puller, Gaffer, Grip, "DV Director", Steadycam operator, Rigger, Best Boy, Spark (Non electrical qualification)
