Course programme
The YMCA Award in Fitness Instructing, Gym-Based Exercise Certificate Level 2 course is 120 hours long and based around three modules.
These are Exercise and Fitness Knowledge (50 hours), Health, Safety and Professionalism in Exercise (10 hours) and Fitness Instructing Gym Based (60 hours).
Successful completion of this course will give 20 credits towards the Register of Exercise Professionals. Candidates will gain exercise and fitness knowledge covering: Bones and joints, muscles and muscle actions, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and components of fitness.
Fitness Instructor Students will also cover the following topics:
- How to plan and teach safe and effective exercise sessions
- The principles of training
- How to adapt exercise to suit varied fitness levels
- How to use a range of teaching skills
- The body’s systems and its response to exercise
- Health and safety factors such as how to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
- How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme
The course is assessed internally and an external theory exam is also set.
There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification; however candidates should have some awareness of using a gym or participating in group or exercise classes or equivalent.
