About this course

You need a mature outlook to study, an interest in youth justice, and be working / volunteering with young people. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to work at Level 3. Applicants will be required to provide a letter-headed document confirming their placement before they can enrol. Criminal Record Bureau checks are required.

What will I learn?
The course equips the student, volunteer and/or employee with the necessary skills that are recognised by the National Occupational Standards (NOS). This qualification is for people working in, or hoping to work in statutory and voluntary agencies. Students will follow a course of study that engages with general areas such as: Youth Justice; values and diversity; ethics within youth justice, among other topics. In particular, the course will focus on specific units such as practice in youth justice, ethics, values and diversity, the development and behaviour of young people, inter-agency work, and employment rights and responsibilities. Students will gain knowledge from the valuable contributions from guest speakers and practioners who work in the Youth Justice Sector. Students gather evidence of their study and work experience through the development of a portfolio which includes: witness statements from employers, voluntary organisations, and essays and reflective accounts based around issues of youth justice.

How will I be taught?
Portfolio development - this includes guidance on writing on critical issues that affect young people who come into contact with the youth justice system. Youth Justice based activities, classroom work; workshops; lecturer presentations; debate forums.

How will I be assessed?
Submission of Portfolio (which includes: observation reports of presentations; reflective journal entries, placement witness statements and reports).

What could I do next?
You may progress to employment within youth work/youth justice or progress on to higher education. Students will be better placed to apply to university to attend a youth justice related degree course.

How would this benefit my employer?
The course is recognised by the (National Occupational Standards) NOS and this will allow for further career progression. The employer will be instilled with confidence when planning programmes of care knowing that the student will have achieved the necessary skills to ensure that they carry out their duties to the best of their ability, based on codes of practice and the demonstration of good ethical decision-making.
