Environmental Science
The Environmental Studies specification enables students to gain a deep and well-informed insight into the environment, and the scientific processes that control and affect it. The central theme is the development of an understanding of how different events and cycles within the environment interrelate, how they influence subsequent environmental events, the human impacts on these events and cycles, and the strategies that can be used to minimise the problems caused. Key aspects within the specification include areas such as Wildlife Conservation, Pollution, Global Climate Change and Sustainability.

What Will I Learn On This Course?

In the first year you will have an introduction to the biodiversity of life on Planet Earth. The reasons why the conservation of life on Earth is important are investigated, as are the methods, which may be used to achieve effective conservation. Conservation in the UK, coral reefs, Antarctica and tropical rainforests are used to develop these issues further. This will be followed in unit 2 with looking at the physical resources of the planet and how we exploit these.

In the A2 year we will continue this study of the earth in Unit 3, with how we resource our energy needs and the pollution caused by the use of physical resources and energy. This will allow consideration of the information learned in Units 1 and 2. Unit 4 involves the study of the factors controlling human population growth are considered in relation to the demands placed upon the planets resources and life-support systems. Food production and forestry systems are analysed, with particular emphasis on the limiting factors affecting productivity, the environmental problems caused by these systems and the ways in which problems can be addressed. The study of the sustainability of human lifestyles allows synoptic consideration of the other modules of the specification.

Course Content And Method Of Assessment

The AS examination consists of two written units containing a combination of short answer and structured questions, including extended prose questions.
Unit 1 will be 1 hour, worth 40% of the AS
Unit 2 will be 11/2 hour and be worth 60% of the AS.

The AS grade will contribute 50% to the final A level.

The A2 examination can be entered by those who successfully complete the AS year. The examination will again consist of two written units containing a mixture of short answer, comprehension, data analysis and essay questions. Unit 3 will be 11/2-hour duration; Unit 4 will be 2 hours. Both will have equal weighting.

The A2 will contribute 50% towards the final A level grade.

Students are not required to submit an internally assessed environmental studies investigation. However, it is expected that candidates should carry out investigative activities, appropriate to the study of a range of environmental systems and the way in which they influence and affect each other. They should carry out extensive, appropriate practical work, both within the laboratory and, wherever possible, out in the environment. Integral to each unit is the development and use of practical skills relevant to the study of the environment; these will be assessed within each unit. Included in these assessments will be the planning and carrying out of investigations, the interpretation of data and the comprehension of relevant environmental texts.

After The Course

As part of a group of science or arts A Level courses, Environmental Studies provides an ideal base for employment, a range of vocational qualifications and a very wide variety of higher education courses, including degrees in areas related to the environment, geography, geology, science, climate, planning and teaching.

Subject Combinations

Environmental Studies will combine with any other subject, particularly for anyone with an interest in the sustainable development of the planet.

However it does complement Biology and Geography in particular, although there is some overlap with Geography which all students will need to consider.
