The specifications are designed to encourage candidates to:

· acquire, through studying literature in translation and material evidence, knowledge and understanding of selected aspects of Classical Greek and/or Roman Civilisation for Advanced Subsidiary GCE and of both Classical Greek and Roman Civilisation for Advanced GCE;
· develop awareness of the similarities and differences between the Classical world and later times, and thus to gain a sensitivity to past societies whose spiritual, cultural and moral values and priorities contrast with those of the modern western world;
· progress to Higher Education courses in Classical Civilisation, or directly into employment.

Course Units AS Level H041 Two of the following:

· Archaeology and the Classical World
· Homer's Odyssey and Society
· Roman Society and Thought
· Greek Tragedy in its Context
· Greek Historians
· City Life in Roman Italy

A2 Level H441 Two of the following:

· Roman Britain
· Art and Architecture in the Greek World
· Comic Drama in the Ancient World
· The Epic and the Age of Augustus

There may also be the option of combining Classical Civilisation/Latin/Greek modules into one AS (OCR H038) or A2 (OCR H438) course.

Further Opportunities Classical Civilisation is a well-regarded subject which combines well with other subjects like History, English, Archaeology, RE and Art.
