A Level Dance is achieved through a rigorous programme of theoretical and practical studies. The syllabus focuses on the three key areas of Performance, Choreography and Appreciation, with a programme of study involving theoretical lectures, research and written homework to complement practical study. In addition there will be theatre trips and workshops with visiting professionals to complement the course specification.
Given sufficient demand, students may take Dance to a ful A Level by studying for the A2 examination.

Course Units The Advanced (A) and Advanced Supplementary (AS) qualifications are achieved by taking assessment units in stages over one or two years. AS EXAMINATION (Year 1) The first year of study will develop technical and performance skills in ballet, contemporary and jazz, with particular focus on understanding the body in action and safe dance practice. Principles of choreography will be studied through practical workshops and the analysis of professional works and an understanding of the historical and cultural context of dances will also be developed. The programme of study in year one is assessed through two units: Unit 1 - Understanding Dance Written Examination lasting 1 hour 30 minutes (40% of AS, 20% of A Level) Unit 2 - Choreography and Performance Practical coursework Two sections: A - solo choreography and performance B - performance in a duo/trio (60% of AS, 30% of A Level) A2 EXAMINATION (Year 2) The second year of study requires the student to explore one genre in more detail than year one. Selected practitioners from a specified era will be studied both practically and theoretically to a more detailed level with knowledge and understanding assessed through both written and performance examination. In addition a specified Set Work is also studied. Choreographic skills are further developed to produce a group dance. Unit 3 - Dance Appreciation: Content and Context Written Examination lasting 1 hour 30 minutes (25% of A Level) Unit 4 - Group Choreography and Solo Performance Practical examination Two sections: A - group choreography B - solo performance (25% of A Level)
