The specifications we will be following offer a rewarding exploration of literature. They are designed to encourage wide reading and advanced detailed research within the field of literary studies. You will build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired during your GCSE English course.
English Literature is recognised as a demanding academic subject. Successful completion of the two units at AS will demonstrate your advanced reading, analysis and response to texts.
Course Units The AS is divided into two units: Poetry and Prose 1800-1945 (closed text examination)
· Poetry 1800-1945 - critical analysis of poetry
· Prose 1800-1945 - analytical essay on a set prose text focusing on narrative methods and effects, and linking to other readers' interpretations
You will study one poetry text, one prose text and support your understanding with reading from critical writings. Literature post 1900 (coursework) Either:
· Close critical analysis of a section of a chosen post-1900 text
or
· Re-creative writing based on a post-1900 chosen text with candidate commentary
or
· An essay exploring connections between texts informed by other readers' interpretations
You will study at least three post-1900 texts of which two must be literary, one must have been published or performed after 1990 and one may be a work of literary criticism or cultural commentary. The AS requires you to show knowledge and understanding of a minimum of six literary texts across at least two genres of prose, poetry and drama. A2 offers further development and preparation for higher academic studies and many careers. The two further units are: Drama and Poetry pre-1800 (closed text examination)
· Shakespeare - one essay question will be asked
· Drama and Poetry pre 1800 - you will be required to answer one essay question based on a comparative study of one drama text and one poetry text
Texts in Time (coursework) This unit encourages the further development of research skills and the synthesis of knowledge and understanding of literary texts across at least two of the genres of poetry, prose and drama. You will need to buy specified editions of texts for this course.
