Introduction 2 years full-time
The OCR AS/A2 GCE in Modern Foreign Languages builds on your knowledge and understanding acquired at GCSE. You will be able to integrate the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing for the purposes of practical communication required for study, work and leisure.
The study of Modern Languages will help you communicate more confidently as you learn about the culture and contemporary society of your chosen country/countries through the means of internet, film and satellite TV. In addition you are encouraged to reach a positive understanding of other languages and cultures by meeting native speakers who are also studying at the College.
With a qualification in languages you might choose to go on to Higher Education, combining it with subjects such as Geography, History, Business Studies, Marketing or Law, or go directly into employment in areas such as Travel and Tourism.
Course Units Assessment units for AS To get a certificate for AS GCE you will need to have studied for and been assessed on two AS units which are: Speaking In this unit you will conduct a role-play with the examiner based on a short English stimulus, followed by a brief presentation and discussion on a topic of your choice. Listening, Reading and Writing 1 In this unit you will listen to three recorded texts and you will have individual control over the cassette. Three reading texts will be set for comprehension. There will be a number of exercises, one of which will require you to summarise one text and provide a personal response to the issues raised. One exercise will ask you to choose the correct word to fill a gap and will test your knowledge of grammar. Assessment units for A2 Speaking and Reading In this unit you will talk about an article in the target language, which you will have studied during the 20 minute preparation time. Then you will discuss your opinions on one or two prepared topics of your choice. Reading, Listening & Writing 2 Questions will be set, mainly in the target language, on two listening and two reading texts. Some exercises will be in English. You will also be asked to explain some material in English and add your own opinions. There is also an extended essay chosen from the A2 topic areas. These two assessment units complete the Advanced GCE qualification.
