About this course

Whilst a GCSE in Geography is not essential it is recommended. It is also desirable that students will have obtained A-C grades in English and Mathematics before commencing this course.

Throughout the Geography course you will be given an opportunity to study a wide range of issues of national and international importance. The specification has a particular focus upon how people manage the physical and human environment and the sustainable development of these environments.
You will gain a number of skills whilst studying Geography which encompass aspects of statistical and data analysis, as well as essay and report writing skills along with the associated map and field work skills required to be a good Geographer. These wide ranging abilities should prepare you for a number of different options for the future whether in Higher Education or out in the work place.
Students are expected to apply geographical principles and concepts to real life events, referred to as case studies in Geography and understand the causes, effects and solutions to a number of different situations.

Course Units Subject Content and Assessment - AS Level Module 1 - Physical and Human Geography (2 hour exam) Topics covered may include:

· Rivers, floods and management
· Cold environments, coastal environments and hot desert environments and their margins
· Global population change
· Food supply issues, energy issues and health issues.

Module 2 - Applied Geography (2 hour exam)

· Basic, investigative, ICT, graphical, cartographical and statistical skills
· Research skills and the assessment of AS fieldwork.

Students will be given the opportunity to attend whole class field trips in order to develop the above skills. Subject Content and Assessment - A2 Level Module 3 - Contemporary Geographical Issues (2 hour exam) Topics covered may include:

· Plate tectonics and associated hazards
· Weather and climate and associated hazards
· Challenges facing ecosystems
· Development and globalisation
· Contemporary conflicts and challenges

Module 4 - Geography Fieldwork Investigation (1 hour 30 mins) Structured short and extended questions based on candidates' own fieldwork investigation. Students will be given the opportunity to practise field work techniques through whole class field trips and through personal investigations.
