Politics, in one form or another, shapes every aspect of our lives today. From our education, to our work, to our social welfare - even what we eat! - everything involves a political issue. No wonder the Greek philosopher Aristotle described man as 'a political animal'!
Government & Politics may be studied as an AS Level in year one, with
the option of continuing in year two to gain the full A Level award.
The study of the AS and A2 in this subject is supported by Information Technology Key Skill lectures as an integral component of our A Level programme.
Course Units AS LEVEL - YEAR ONE Two Units: Unit 1 - People and politics: This unit provides an introduction to the study of politics by looking at the central issues of democracy, participation and citizenship. We will be asking questions such as:
· Do elections guarantee democracy?
· What is the role of political parties?
· How important are pressure groups?
· What are the similarities and differences between the ideas and policies of the major parties and of the ideological relationship between and amongst them?
Unit 2 - Governing the UK: This unit looks at the major institutions of the UK government - Parliament, the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Civil Service and the Judiciary. We will be asking questions such as:
· How adequate is the British Constitution?
· What role does Parliament play?
· How powerful is the Prime Minister?
A LEVEL - YEAR TWO Two Units: Unit 1 - Introducing political ideologies: This unit introduces students to the subject of political ideology and examines the main themes in liberalism, conservatism, socialism and anarchism. Unit 2 - Other ideological traditions: This unit examines the ideological traditions that have developed out of, or in opposition to, liberalism, conservatism and socialism. These ideologies are nationalism, feminism, ecology and multiculturalism.
