Course Units AS LEVEL - YEAR ONE Module 1: The English Civil War and Interregnum 1637-60 The English Civil War lasted over 6 years and was an enormous shock and upheaval for those who lived through it. As a proportion of the total population, more men died in the Civil War than by the slaughter of machine guns and artillery during WW1. How did this brutal event happen? How was the population of the country affected? Why did the war end in the execution of a King? What problems remained after its conclusion? These are just some of the central questions that will be addressed in a highly challenging A Level source paper exam. Module 2: Democracy and Dictatorship in Germany 1919-63 When he was 24 , Hitler was unemployed having made no effort to get a job. He was charged with avoiding military service by Austrian authorities and subsequently failed the medical for the Austrian army. By the time he was 45, Hitler was the unquestioned leader of Germany with enormous power and a resolute ambition to dominate and control Europe. How do historians explain this transformation? Can one man be entirely blamed for the massive destruction of World War Two? Did Hitler plan the Holocaust from the start? This exam-based unit investi-gates the issues surrounding these questions at a sophisticated, in-depth level. A trip to Poland is planned as part of this area of investigation. A2 LEVEL - YEAR TWO Module 1: Historical Interpretations and Investigations There are two elements in this coursework-based assessment: Interpretations: Up to 2,000 words examining a number of historians' interpretations of a chosen area of debate. Investigations: A 2,000 word (max) personal investigation into a problem or issue about which there are a variety of views. Module 2: Historical Themes - Civil Rights in the USA 1865-1992 (2 hour exam) In covering over one hundred years, the 'themes' unit emphasises continuity, development and change in order to establish a broad, advanced view of the struggle of citizens in the United States to gain equal treatment without regard to ethnic origin, gender or wealth.
