The study of Law at A Level combines well with a range of other subjects such as English, Business Studies, History, Politics, Psychology and Sociology. It also provides an excellent preparation for studying Law at university.
We offer a lively and stimulating course of study using a variety of teaching methods including not only lectures and seminars but also debates, videos and case studies.

Assessment Syllabus/assessment: The course studies the foundation of the English legal system. The rules of civil and criminal law are researched and applied to given scenarios. Students will assess evidence and recognise remedies or solutions. Assessment is by essay-style written examination only. There is no course work. Subject content: AS LEVEL: Unit 1 - Law Making and the Legal System Exploration of law making by Parliament and the Courts and an appreciation of the English legal system. Study of the courts and alternatives to using them, as well as solicitors and barristers, judges, magistrates and sources of legal advice and assistance. Unit 2 - The Concept of Liability Introduction by case studies to criminal law with particular reference to non-fatal offences against the person and to civil law through liability in negligence for physical injury and damage. The different ranges of sentences and damages are also covered. A2 LEVEL: Unit 3 - Criminal Law (Offences against the Person) Criminal Law - Murder, manslaughter and non-fatal offences against the person, together with the general defences of insanity, automatism, consent, self defence and intoxication. Unit 4 - Offences against Property and Concepts of Law Theft, robbery, blackmail, burglary, fraud and criminal damage are all studied using cases. Concepts of Law - consideration of law's role in supporting morality, justice and individual freedoms.
