Introduction 2 years full-time
The mass media are a vital element of life in Britain today. Not only do they provide us with information about the world in which we live, but also with much of our entertainment. A critical understanding of how the mass media work can help us develop a valuable insight into our culture.
A Level Media Studies enables students to gain this understanding through both practical and theoretical method. The course is wide-ranging and includes the detailed study of media products, such as certain films or newspapers. Students also explore key current debates in the media, such as possible links between the media and violence in society, or the future of broadcasting. Our excellent technical facilities enable students to put into practice some of the theories they have learnt.
Media Studies links well with a wide range of A Level subjects, particularly in the Arts and Humanities.
Course Units AS LEVEL: In the first year students will learn some of the fundamental analytical and practical skills used in this area. These will be approached via:
· The study of popular cultural forms in television
· Patterns of ownership within the media industry
· The relationship between the audience and media institutions
· A practical media project following a set brief
These will be assessed by two written examinations, a piece of coursework and supporting documentation. A2 LEVEL: In the second year students will develop a more critical approach to the subject. This will give them the opportunity to:
· Conduct a critical research study into one of a range of media topics
· Study key debates about the place of media in our society
· Produce an advanced practical product in the medium of Film, TV or Print
Assessment These will be assessed by two written examinations, one of which will draw on the range of topics covered in both the AS and A2 ourses, and the production of a media artefact with accompanying documentation. Over the two years, coursework accounts for 50% of the total A Level marks; the written papers are worth 50% each.
