Typical philosophical questions would be: Does God exist? Why is murder wrong? By investigating the topics outlined in the modules below, students in A Level Philosophy will reflect on and develop their personal values and attitudes.
Course Units AS Units
Unit G571 - Philosophy of Religion
(1½ hour two-part essay examination; 50% of final AS grade; 25% of A2)
Ancient Greek influences on philosophy of religion, Judaeo-Christian influences on philosophy of religion, traditional arguments for the existence of God, challenges to religious belief, the problem of evil, religion and science.
Unit G572 - Religious Ethics
(1½ hour two-part essay examination; 50% of final AS grade; 25% of A2)
Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism, Natural Law, Kantian ethics, religious ethics, absolutism & relativism.
Applied ethics: war and peace, euthanasia, abortion, genetic engineering.
A2 Units
A2 studies build on knowledge and skills acquired at AS Level. Teaching will draw on the candidate's understanding of units G571 and G572. Candidates will further develop their skills in critical evaluation and in justifying a point of view through use of evidence and reasoned argument.
Unit G581 - Philosophy of Religion
(1½ hour open essay style examination; 25% of A2 grade)
Knowledge and understanding: religious language, religious experience, the nature of God, miracles, life after death and the soul.
Unit G582 - Religious Ethics
(1½ hour open essay style examination; 25% of A2 grade)
Ethical topics and theories: meta-ethics, freewill and determination, conscience, virtue ethics.
Applied ethics: business and environmental ethics, sexual ethics.
