About this course

A grade C in English Language is needed for this course, as well as the normal college requirements of 5 GCSEs at grade A* - C. However because of the essay based nature of the course it is highly desirable for students to have a B or above for English Language.

Introduction

The Religious Studies Course at Barton Peveril is fascinating and wide ranging. Over the 2 years of the full A level you will cover a variety of aspects of Religious Studies, including Religious and Secular Ethics, Modern applications of moral systems and at A2 level, religious, philosophical and secular views on the possibility of Life after Death and the nature and value of human life.

The Religious Studies A level requires you to consider religious belief and practice with an enquiring and academic approach. You will find yourself studying alongside people with no religious belief or commitment as well as those with closely held religious beliefs. If you have an open mind and an interest in religious ideas and their philosophical background you are likely to enjoy this course.


What Will I Learn On This Course?

Religious Studies encourages you to take an critical but empathetic approach to the study of Religion. You will develop skills in analysing a very wide variety of religious and secular approaches to ethical decision making and how these are applied to some of the most controversial and difficult ethical dilemmas of our day. In the A2 course you will also look at religious and non-religious approaches to the nature of human life, death and the possibility of personal survival after death.

You will be encouraged to think through these issues yourself, developing your critical skills and your ability to reason clearly and express your ideas both verbally and on paper.


Course Content and Method of Assessment

You will follow the AQA Religious Studies A level course.
AS students study the 2 following units, each unit being assessed by a 1 hour 15 minute written examination. To gain a full A level, students study a further 2 units, each being assessed by a 1 hour 30 minute examination.

AS Unit A - Religion and Ethics 1
This unit considers two major consequences based theories or moral reasoning - Utilitarianism and Situation Ethics and their application to the candidate's choice of ethical dilemma. It also examines religious teaching and secular views specifically related to the ethics of abortion and euthanasia.

AS Unit B - Religion and Ethics 2
This unit examines two major law based theories of moral reasoning and their application to the candidate's choice of ethnical dilemma. It also considers religious and secular responses to the current environmental crisis.

A2 Unit 3A - Religion and Ethics 3
This unit explores differing views on human free choices. It will consider the view that human moral choices are the result of our habits and character and investigates the application of this view in modern health care ethics. It also examines religious and secular views on the ethical dilemmas arising from modern scientific and technological advances and ethical issues raised by human sexuality.

Unit 4 A Topic I or Unit 4C Topic II
The final unit considers religious and secular views on the nature and value of human life, and on a variety of approaches to the possibility and nature of life after death, or the application of moral systems to medical research and development.


After The Course?

Religious Studies provides a credible academic basis for a broad range of university courses and professions. Many students go on to study, Religious Studies, Theology or Philosophy at university. Both the AS and A2 course contains a major ethical component that are of a high value to anyone going on to study Medicine or other health related professions, as well as any of the Social Sciences.


Subject Combinations

Religious Studies AS and A2 complement many other subjects and teach skills of critical analysis that make it a suitable 'fourth subject' for those focusing on Science and Maths.

There are no prohibited combinations and students are welcome to take RS alongside Philosophy or Critical Thinking A Levels.
