Level: AS/A2
Awarding Body: AQA AS 1191/A2 2191
Course Content:
What is Sociology? Sociology is the study of society and of the groups and institutions which make up society. The AS course involves the study of three topic areas: Families and Households, Education and Sociological Methods. The course will begin with an introduction to sociology and the study of society and has a practical element as students will carry out a number of small-scale research projects involving the use of questionnaires, interviews and observation techniques.
The A2 course builds on the work carried out in the AS. Students study the topics of Methods again including Sociological Theory, Beliefs in Society and Crime and Deviance.
Teaching Learning Methods:
A variety of teaching methods are used including class discussion, note-taking, group work, presentations, reading texts, dvds and independent research activities. All students are encouraged to read a broadsheet newspaper regularly.
Assessment:
Both the AS and the A2 are assessed by written examinations.

Students will need to follow debates in the press and on TV. Essay writing and examination skills are important and will be developed from early on in the course. Students will need to show commitment and determination and expect to spend 5 hours per week on this subject in addition to their timetabled lessons. Wider reading and effort is essential to secure the top grades.

Students will have the opportunity to attend a conference on sociological issues. Students will also be expected to buy a textbook at the start of the course.

Many students continue with their sociological studies at university level either as a single honours degree or as part of a social science degree.
