Why should I study Applied Business?
The business world is unpredictable. This course will address issues faced in the real world of business. To be successful on the course you need to be interested in the subject matter and be prepared to look at business problems in a critical way.
It is a vocationally relevant qualification with a strong emphasis on applying theory to the business world and preparing students for employment or higher education. Work-related learning is an important aspect of the course. There is a work placement in year 13.
What will I study?
AS Units
The AS course provides you with an introduction to the real world of business. The focus is on understanding how businesses are organised and how they achieve their objectives.

The business plan forms the basis of your studies in year 13. You will be encouraged to investigate the viability of a business idea of your choice and learn how to apply the work from year 12.

How will I be taught?
The subject will be taught by a range of specialist teachers, using IT facilities as well as traditional classroom teaching
How is the course assessed?
Half of the assessment is through portfolio assignments. The remaining units are externally examined. If you prefer coursework you should consider taking this course.
AS
- two 1 hr written exams and one 1½ hr written exam with a practical element plus three coursework portfolios.
A2
- three 1½ hr written exams plus three coursework portfolios.
What will this course prepare me for?
NEW College has developed an excellent reputation over the years and has good links with universities and local businesses. You will have a head-start in careers/degree courses in accountancy, banking, retail management, human resources and marketing. You will also gain a valuable insight into the business world which will add value to your studies.
Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
