Subjects Covered AS Subject Content: The “stand-alone” AS qualification has four modules comprised of ‘Foundations in biology’, Exchange and transport’, ‘Biodiversity, evolution and disease’, and ‘Development of practical skills in biology’. The practical module is integrated with the theoretical topics and assessed through the written papers. A Level Subject Content: There are five externally assessed modules studied over two years: ‘Foundations in biology’, ‘Exchange and transport’, ‘Biodiversity, evolution and disease’, ‘Communication, homeostasis and energy’ and ‘Genetics, evolution and ecosystems’. These cover different key concepts of biology and explore how they are relevant in the world, today. The ‘Development of practical skills in biology’ module is integrated with the theoretical topics and assessed through the written papers and evidenced in a written portfolio, which is centre assessed. What skills will I learn? The Human Biology A Level course helps students develop a number of skills: • How to assemble data and assess it • How to investigate facts and use deduction • How to put over your point of view fluently • How to work in a team to achieve this Resources required Students will be required to purchase a textbook for both AS and A2. On completion All students will take the AS qualification at the end of the first year. Those progressing will take examinations in all of the modules to achieve the A Level qualification at the end of the second year. Careers Biology is a great choice of subject for people who want a career in health and clinical professions, where the Government has identified a significant skills shortage, as well as people who want to follow a broad general education. Students who take Biology often also study from a wide range of subjects including Psychology, Sociology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Mathematics.
