Learn about your culture; its unwritten rules and codes, its power structures and value systems – and its importance for your own sense of identity. What do we mean by communication? What is culture? How do the two come together to turn us into the person we are? Look at your own culture and connect your own experience to your study. Draw on your own experiences to compare 'high' and 'popular' culture. How do we judge different cultural products and practices? Have you got a mobile phone or an MP3 player? How important are they to you, and why? Why are they designed the way they are? Can they tell us anything about ourselves and the way we relate to others? As objects, what do they mean? A2 We look at perspectives such as Postmodernism and Feminism, and key concepts such as power, discourse and technology. We study “Fictions” – the ‘stories’ that make up our culture in the form of films, music videos, plays, adverts, social networking, computer games.
